spring cleaning

The weather is finally coordinating with my recent shoe purchases, and I’ve never been more ready for sunshine. I have an agenda; this summer I am going to make better use of the deck. I’ve got several planters and large buckets to recycle, now I just need to hit the hardware store for some potting soil.

My gardening intention is to be able to make my own pickles by the end of summer. I’d pretty much be the happiest girl in the world if I was independently pickle wealthy. I figure I’ll also grow several types of peppers, onions, and some spices, as well as some tomatoes because I might as well make some salsa. I like making my own pesto too, and I’ve got to get moving on this because I’m already hungry just thinking about it.

These upside-down tomato planters I keep seeing ads for seem perfect for my needs (although I’m not sure why I couldn’t just make one myself). My deck is larger than most apartment decks, but I still should make as much use of vertical space with shelves and hanging pots as possible so that I can still get around the table. The table still needs an umbrella, and I’ve been looking at an over-the-rail folding table from Ikea that I think would accommodate a small hibachi.

I think the deck is what sold me on the apartment almost three years ago, and it wasn’t even half the size back then. My landlord added on to it to replace a portion that was going to beĀ  in the way of a fan they were installing in the restaurant below and so was to be removed. Lucky for me, they changed their plans before getting to that stage. The big question is whether or not the wifi signal is strong enough on that side of the building so that I can work out there. The idea of working in the fresh air with some brews instead of cooped up inside seems so ideal right now. I’m sure it will end in bee stings and broken glass, but right now, sitting in a windowless office overhearing passersby remark on the lovely day it’s my latest dream.

I’m in the middle of a design overhaul here, so if things look strange or my permalinks break, it’s because I’m actively effin’ shit up, as the kids say. The base template is laid out exactly as I wanted but I am not sure why they mixed serif and sans fonts. The margins/padding on the bulleted lists are odd and I want to replace the blockquote style altogether. The fellow who created it kept the css very organized though with the idea that it should be easy to customize. So many of these WordPress themes are a mess to work with.

An idea I’ve been tossing about is randomizing the image header. I did it before on an old Nucleus installation, so I sort of have it together in my head. The current one is something I cropped from an old pamphlet from a government archive of early American publications. I’m still hunting up the citation for it, but it is public domain.

This is my caption for it: “Battle for Eliza’s Heart. Left to right — Inspector Clouseau, Tom Waits, Buddy Holly, Ben Franklin, Susan B. Anthony, and John Goodman.”
